The outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost was never intended to terminate in private spiritual experience. It was the inauguration of a divinely empowered people, called not merely to receive the life of God but to serve as instruments through whom the purposes of God advance on earth. The Holy Spirit who indwells the believer is also the Spirit who empowers witness, strengthens service, grants spiritual gifts, directs mission, establishes courage, releases wisdom, and produces fruitfulness in ministry.
